As Michigan falls further behind, some ask: Time to overhaul high school?

Published in Bridge Michigan on April 10, 2026

Bridge Michigan recently took a deeper look at the work underway to create the Michigan Education Guarantee (MEG)—a bold effort to ensure every student graduates with the knowledge, skills, and real‑world experiences needed for success after high school.

As the article highlights, Michigan’s current system too often measures learning by time spent in a seat rather than mastery and readiness, contributing to persistent achievement gaps and workforce misalignment. The MEG responds by modernizing graduation expectations around transferable skills, career-connected learning, and equitable access to opportunities—while pairing those expectations with a reciprocal accountability system and more adequate, student‑centered funding.

With student outcomes still lagging and employers struggling to find skilled talent, the MEG represents a necessary shift from compliance to outcomes—one designed to better serve students, communities, and Michigan’s long‑term economic future.

Many thanks to Bridge Michigan for sharing the case for change. If you’re interested in getting involved with the Michigan Education Guarantee, reach out to participate@launchmichigan.org.
