As the Legislature works to finalize the state budget, it’s critical that our leaders answer a key question: How can we ensure all Michigan students receive a top-notch education that prepares them for post-secondary learning and 21st Century careers?
Parents want what’s best for their children. They know that the best chance at a bright future is ensuring their kids go to stellar schools. We in the education, business and philanthropic communities couldn’t agree more. That’s why we formed Launch Michigan and are calling for the Legislature to act on two areas where we’ve already reached consensus: school funding and literacy support.
Michigan is long overdue for a weighted school funding formula that prioritizes equity, adequacy and effectiveness by making strategic, evidence-based investments in students with the greatest need. The state should provide additional funding for special education, students living in poverty, English language learners, and career and technical education programs.
